What is the meaning of this, that, and the other? I imagined a hodgepodge of music without a clear foreground or mode as to how we might view our present, which I felt was likely “this”. “This” appears as a view of our current activities in sight, but without the effects from causes which aid conclusions. “This” perhaps seems like a word that indicates something directly in front of oneself which time again proves an unreliable perspective. Whereas the second section’s straightforward and organized character sounds most like “that”. The melody is very sure. Very repetitive. Very singable. The principle of hindsight being 20/20 suggests an easier evaluation of the past. It looks like something we can point to and call “that”. (But feel free to exercise a flexible perception on what is “this” and “that”, as you emotionally identify with the feeling of these sections. A wonderful aspect about music without words is the listener can personalize the music in a way lyrics might not always allow.)
The “other” however, appears to point to where we are going, does it not? After all, the future might include our deepest concerns and wildest aspirations! Somewhat related to what has been and is now, but also something new. I know I for one often have the most excitement about the future because it seems full of possibility! So as you listen, I invite you to indulge in dreaming of the “other”, reminiscing of “that”, and being fully present for today’s celebratory “this”.
