My three cello suites are loosely based on Christmas Carols, and are by nature largely written as compound melodies with multiple lines present within. Minuet I and II are based on a rendition of O Holy Night, which features a ostinato movement from the tonic triad, to the triad based on the flat ^ 7 scale degree. Accents and articulation should be carefully regarded to give the piece interest and contrast. The Allemande is the slowest of the three, and is based on the familiar tune Angels We Have Heard on High, though places draw from my own re-harmonization of the carol. Dynamic contrast is important throughout this work. The Gigue is based on O Little Town of Bethlehem (St.Louis), in which the performer should take care not to play too fast. This suite highlights the use of the double stop and features hemiola in several places.
