for Concert Band
And it Begins is the winner of the 2016 National Band Association/Alfred Publishing Young Band Composition Contest. It is currently published with Alfred, and can be found at their website!
The moment in time when an instrument is assigned to an incoming beginning band student has major implications on how the student will spend the next six to seven years in middle school and high school. This composition celebrates these new beginnings! The melodic intro quickly gives way to a snare and low winds feature. The middle section highlights a lydian sound, unique to the composer’s writing style, building to a full band climax and the return of the snare solo. All instruments will enjoy playing this fresh, new composition for concert band!
