Fingerprints Consortium

Adolescence is a time of exploration — a time when students are constantly trying to answer the question: Who am I? They experiment with new activities, sports, friends, clothes, and haircuts. They test out different versions of themselves and are in the beautiful, messy process of discovering their identity.

This search for identity mirrors the story of Fingerprints itself. Originally commissioned by the Fergus Falls Middle School Band, Composer Haley Woodrow filled the work with creativity and fresh ideas, but during the latter stages of writing, life’s unexpected challenges meant the piece had to be completed before fully reaching the vision we had imagined.

While unfortunate, it is fitting in a way — because just like our students, Fingerprints is still searching for its own unique voice. So, we extend an invitation to join in the music’s relatable concept and journey to completion, and humbly ask for your financial and communal support. This work hopes to see every player leave their own mark on a shared musical canvas — serving as a tangible reminder that who they are, and who they are becoming, matters.

With gratitude,

Consortium Director Scott Kummrow and Composer Haley Woodrow

About Blue Mist

Composed By: Haley Woodrow

Difficulty Level: Grade .5

Duration: 1:04

Full Band and Adaptable versions included.

Percussion: Snare drum/tom-tom, bass drum, opt. timpani, opt. bells.

Tracks Included: Studio recording, recording with click, and percussion with click.

Exercises Included: Unison phrasing/breath control exercise.

Blue Mist is a “six note” piece playable with just flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet and trombone. The trombone part is slightly different from the low winds and euphonium to avoid sixth position C. The work is in C minor, but the concert Ab is never utilized. If it helps, you can therefore have your students think in the key of Bb! If you are short on percussionists and you have timpani available, omit the bell part first. For the Adaptable Band parts, please be aware the ranges will be far beyond a Grade .5 for each instrument. I did keep all three parts below the break for the clarinet and bass clarinet.

About Desert Visions

Composed By: Haley Woodrow

Difficulty Level: Grade .5

Duration: 1:42

Full Band and Adaptable versions included.

Percussion: Glockenspiel, Congas, Bass Drum, Ride Cymbal/Triangle, and Cabasa.

Tracks Included: Studio recording, recording with click, and percussion with click.

Exercises Included: Unison melodic and harmonic exercises.

Desert Visions is an eastern inspired work that introduces repetitive eighth notes and the concert pitch F#. It has the range of a “six note” piece playable with just flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and percussion. The melodic motives are evenly dispersed amongst the instruments, and will be a good educational piece to introduce rhythmic independence. Exercises are included to help with the rhythms!

About Beat

Composed By: Haley Woodrow

Difficulty Level: Grade .75

Duration: 1:39

Full Band and Adaptable versions included.

Percussion: Glockenspiel, Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Cowbell (opt. Cymbal Bell)/Cabasa (opt. Shaker), Suspended cymbal, and Opt. Flexatone/Ratchet.

Tracks Included: Studio recording, studio recording with electrict track, and electric track only.

Beat is a rock driven work, reminiscent of bands like The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin! Beginning bands will enjoy learning new articulations and dynamic levels. The low brass are featured on the introduction of the melody, and all instruments will have fun with the groove and 60’s style harmony. Trombones will get much practice from 6th position C to D. Percussionists are featured throughout, with both the underlying pulse and the special auxiliary instruments utilized!

About Skywalking

Composed By: Haley Woodrow

Difficulty Level: Grade .75

Duration: 1:34

Full Band and Adaptable versions included.

Percussion: Opt. Glockenspiel, Vibraphone, Wind Chimes/Wood Blocks, China Cymbal/Triangle, Cajon (opt. Hand Drum), Bass Drum, Opt. Timpani.

Tracks Included: Studio recording, recording with click, percussion/vocals with click, and vocal only with click.

Films have undoubtedly deepened our appreciation for concert music and affected the way we hear music! Skywalking pays homage to the sounds of the silver screen, and students will enjoy playing the cinematic themes in this work and (possibly) being introduced to the eighth note triplet for the first time. The vocalizing and foot taps will provide directors the opportunity to teach about the extramusical elements that contribute to many film-scores.

About Dark Mountain

Composed By: Haley Woodrow

Duration: 1:37

Full Band and Adaptable versions included.

Percussion: Mallets, Snare Drum (opt. Advanced Snare Drum), Bass Drum, Opt. Timpani, Tambourine, and Suspended Cymbal.

Dark Mountain is a Grade 1 work designed to introduce 3/4 meter and d minor.

About Mission Songs

Composed By: Haley Woodrow

Difficulty Level: Grade 1

Duration: 3:13

Full Band and Adaptable versions included.

Percussion: Vibraphone/Log Drum, Agogos (opt. cowbell)/Tom-toms 1, Brass Bells/Tom-toms 2, Chimes/Woodblock, Shaker/Rattle, Optional Triangle/Rattle.

Historically late autumn is a celebration of the end of the harvest, a time to enjoy the fruits of labor, share our abundance with others, and gather to celebrate and exchange our culture and experiences. My goal was to capture the essence of the season, so in the arranging of the two songs in this work, I selected traditional songs with a rich and significant history!

The first song Alabado, is a Spanish word that literally translated means “song of thanksgiving”. The second song, Lac qui Parle is is a tune notated and given lyrics by Joseph Renville, whose mother was Sioux Indian and father was French Canadian. The tune is among the world’s most widely known melodies of American Indian origin, and I included it to honor Native Americans.

About Knight Stars

Composed By: Haley Woodrow

Difficulty Level: Grade 1.5

Duration: 2:50

Full Band and Adaptable versions included.

Percussion: Bells, Snare Drum/Triangle, (Opt. Advanced Snare Drum), Bass Drum, Crash Cymbal/Suspended Cymbal, and Timpani.

Tracks Included: Studio recording, recording with click, and percussion with click.

Exercises Included: Unison melodic exercises.

Knight Stars began as a lullaby, a sweet song that brought to mind a bedtime story – very possibly due to my habit of writing my music very early in the morning! I decided to create a melody that could be played along with the lullaby at the end of the piece, to simulate the idea of dreaming of the day. From this melody I derived the fanfare, and the beginning of the piece was born. The brass and percussion are highlighted during the fanfare, and the woodwinds are featured during the song. A sincere thank-you to the directors and programs listed on the cover for the financial and community support during the creation of this work!

About A New Day

Composed By: Haley Woodrow

Difficulty Level: Grade 2

Duration: 3:18

Full Band and Adaptable versions included.

Percussion: Vibraphone, Snare Drum (Opt. Advanced Snare Drum), Bass Drum, Gong (Opt. Sus. Cymbal)/Tambourine/Triangle, Timpani.

Tracks Included: Studio recording, recording with click, and percussion with click.

Exercises Included: Unison melodic exercises.

A New Day...as of yet, unseen. A resting place. A celebration. The earliest accounts of the timpani records their use in ancient Jewish religious ceremonies. Similarly, due to its circular shape, the gong has been utilized throughout many traditions and cultures to symbolize a beginning that has no end. Both these instruments are used purposefully and joyfully throughout the piece and highlighted in the percussion feature.

It is our responsibility to strive to enter a new day, a better day, and find rest – both immediate and eternal. A sincere thank-you to the directors and programs listed on the cover for the financial and community support during the creation of this work!

About The Scorpion Slayer

Composed By: Haley Woodrow

Difficulty Level: Grade 2

Duration: 2:30

Full Band and Adaptable versions included.

Percussion: Minimum of 4 players and can utilize 9+ percussionists if you like. Instruments utilized are sticks, djembe, suspended cymbal, congas, shaker, tambourine, cabasa, timpani, and glockenspiel.

Exercises Included: An extensive melodies sheet.

The Scorpion Slayer tells the story of a hero slayer who finds themself amidst the desert and at odds with a scorpion. A dance ensues, inspired by the way scorpions look in battle, holding its opponents claws and moving in rhythmic circles. Finally, the scorpion meets its end (splat!) near the end of the work, and the slayer reigns victorious.

About Breaking Light

Composed By: Haley Woodrow

Difficulty Level: Grade 3

Duration: 4:20

Percussion: Vibraphone, Tubular Bells, Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Tambourine/Sus. Cym./Tom-toms, Timpani/Sus. Cym.

Special Note: Includes optional 3rd trumpet part

This work reflects my vision of light breaking into a sanctuary, filling it, and intensifying. Have you ever experienced a light so bright it was terrifying? Light is powerful, beautiful, and at times even – violent. These characteristics are communicated at different places in the piece. (With each ray of light comes a varying reflection, so many times after a musical figure a response occurs that may sound somewhat “offset” and like a shadow.)

About Maoz Tzur

Composed By: Haley Woodrow

Difficulty Level: Grade 3

Duration: 2:50

Full Band and Adaptable versions included.

Percussion: Glockenspiel, Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Temple Blocks/Triangle/Sleigh Bells

I arranged Maoz Tzur to honor Jewish people and their celebration of Hanukkah.

In America, measures 7-8 of the tune are typically a repeat of measures 3-4. However, in England measures 7-8 are altogether different, and highlight a temporary harmonic movement to the V chord. I found this musically interesting, and utilized this rendition in my arrangement!

There are many grace notes and additional musical material. Depending on what instrument are playing which lines, be aware that the grace note can in many cases be lowered or raised by a half step to accommodate specific instrument fingerings. Take caution in changing the grace note if you are combining different instruments on the same line so that they do not clash with one another!

About For Old Times' Sake

Composed By: Haley Woodrow

Difficulty Level: Grade 3.5

Duration: 3:49

Percussion: Marimba/Glockenspiel, Xylophone/Shaker, Slapstick/Hi-hat/Sus. Cym./Crash Cyms, Snare Drum, Bass Drum/Shaker, Timpani/Triangle.

Exercises Included: Melody sheet.

For Old Times’ Sake is a cheerful and celebratory work, with original content as well as short arrangements of Auld Lang Syne and On Wisconsin. The music aims to evoke nostalgia and a sense of the past century’s accomplishments. The result is a sparkling smorgasbord of melody, genre, and technique.

About This, That, and the Other

Composed By: Haley Woodrow

Difficulty Level: Grade 3.5

Duration: 4:02

Percussion: Marimba/Crotales/Shaker/Glockenspiel, Xylophone/Glockenspiel/Finger Cymbals/Crash Cymbals, Suspended Cymbal/Shaker/Vibraphone, Snare Drum/Chimes, Bass Drum/Gong, Timpani

What is the meaning of this, that, and the other? I imagined a hodgepodge of music without a clear foreground or mode as to how we might view our present, which I felt was likely “this”. “This” appears as a view of our current activities in sight, but without the effects from causes which aid conclusions. “This” perhaps seems like a word that indicates something directly in front of oneself which time again proves an unreliable perspective. Whereas the second section’s straightforward and organized character sounds most like “that”. The melody is very sure. Very repetitive. Very singable. The principle of hindsight being 20/20 suggests an easier evaluation of the past. It looks like something we can point to and call “that”. (But feel free to exercise a flexible perception on what is “this” and “that”, as you emotionally identify with the feeling of these sections. A wonderful aspect about music without words is the listener can personalize the music in a way lyrics might not always allow.)

The “other” however, appears to point to where we are going, does it not? After all, the future might include our deepest concerns and wildest aspirations! Somewhat related to what has been and is now, but also something new. I know I for one often have the most excitement about the future because it seems full of possibility! So as you listen, I invite you to indulge in dreaming of the “other”, reminiscing of “that”, and being fully present for today’s celebratory “this”.
